Intro To Sketch Writing: Character, Game, and the Absurd

In this 8-week course you’ll learn the essentials of sketch comedy that will sharpen your writing skills and help you find your own distinctive comedic voice. You will finish this coures with the tools you need to develop characters, premise, Game, and relationship dynamics that get your audiences laughing early and will leave them wanting more!
WILL CLEVELAND brings 20 years of theatre experience into his class. He has served as Artistic Director of ColdTowne since 2016 and trained in improv and sketch writing at New York's Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. He wrote and produced works for UCBComedy.com as well as produced for Above Average, Funny or Die, Official Comedy and more. His show "One Hour Til Air" received the B. Iden Payne award for best Improv Cast in 2019.

WELCOME TO THE SNL WRITERS ROOM
Comedy writer and SNL alumni Liz Cackowski takes students through what a week at Saturday Night Live is like as a writer. From brainstorming to pitching to writing to read-through to notes and rewriting, students will get as much of the SNL experience as can be fit into three hours.
Students will need to submit an original SNL-style sketch prior to class to share and work on.
LIZ CACKOWSKI is a comedy writer and actress. After beginning her career performing at Boom Chicago in Amsterdam and The Second City in Chicago, she was hired as a writer for Saturday Night Live. After three seasons of SNL, Liz went on to write for several sitcoms including Community, The Last Man on Earth, and Girls 5 Eva. Along with fellow SNL alums Emily Spivey and Amy Poehler, she co-wrote and acted in Netflix’s Wine Country. Other on-screen acting credits include: Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Speechless, and Neighbors 1 and 2.

The Writers Room
Prequisite: must have taken Sketch Level 01 at ColdTowne
(proof of vaccination required)
In this 8-week class, you and your fellow writers will pitch your fresh sketch ideas and hold table reads of your drafts in a collaborative setting. This is a deeper dive into satire, parody, characters, and the absurd! You will finish this class with your completed sketch packet - an example portfolio of your sketch comedy writing. This class includes a reading / performance at the end of the eight weeks.
